  • The same thing is true in academics; many people lack perspective. Generally speaking, most people think they relatively smart, or even above average. Just like NBA players, most of us never come across truly brilliant people in real life because they are rare. I went to an above average college, but not top-tier. Every other person was the top of their class in high school. The average high school GPA was a 4.6. Mine was much lower. I was surrounded by people who could grasp really sophisticated concepts easily. I went from thinking I was smart to realizing I was barely average. The point is this: stay humble, work hard at all things, but don't overestimate your abilities because you'll sound grandiose and embarrass yourself.

  • I played against Joe Smith during the NBA strike in the late 90s. I'm 6'2", was 35 years old and a decent player. At one point, Joe was dribbling left handed down the sideline. I moved over to cut off his dribble. As he approached me, I started to lean to pick his cross-over. He stepped over me without slowing down and continued on as if I wasn't there. LOL.

I thought he was easy cause I'm much larger than him.. then he turned into Micheal jordan, behind neck passes, oops, dunks, nothing but net shots. Could barley keep up with where he even is. He beat my team 10-2. He scored all 10 shots barley broke a sweat. 😂

  • This kind of "I could hang with those guys" mentality pervades the road-biking community. I'll never forget going to see the Tour of California, where my buddy and I did a climb that was on the race route then came back down midway to find a good vantage point. When the peloton finally came by, they were FLYING up the mountain. Like at driving speed. Then a few minutes later the "lantern rouge" came by. These are the guys at the very back of the race, way behind the main pack, trying to go just fast enough to stay in qualification (probably sprinters or guys who had led their team leaders to a certain point). It was two guys, riding casually up the same climb, chatting, not breathing hard, at a pace I still couldn't even comprehend. These two guys couldn't stay with their peers, and climbed WAY faster than any weekend warrior I'd ever seen. The difference between pros and spectators is night and day.

  • Same thing happens in every profession. I see people claiming some random ass "street fighter" can beat professional boxers. They would kill you no joke. Some people say Bruce Lee could win against Muhammad Ali. No disrespect to Bruce Lee of course since he is an exceptional martial artist but he is good art the art part. He had some good theories too but he was no fighter. Ali on the other hand was a "professional" fighter.

I'm a 6"5" above average player, and have several experiences with ex pros in pickup games. Everytime they absolutely destroyed me.

  • I knew guys that wrong their way to the league growing up. That did pretty good against guys that actually made it. But me? I played one on one against a guy that was the best on his college team. The best I could do was 7 points to his 15. And that was a long time ago.

    Lorenzo HaynesLorenzo Haynes4 dager siden
  • if i've got 1 point i would be happy

    Robin CloudeRobin Cloude4 dager siden
  • Something is odd about this. The guy is good and much much better than many alright. BUT.... Here is the thing., In basket ball you need several tries before you get to know a player well and be able to mount a challenge. The guy is clearly picking the players he knows he can split apart.. Is a set up!!! I want him to walk down any park and play with regular people over in spontaneous pick up games to see how he does. Then you can say he is in ''another level'' if he does the same ''consistently''. Another thing in Basket ball you can have good and bad days. One day you only throw bricks and ''any one'' can beat you. One last thing: I notice the guy is a real warrior and competitor. One of the problems with the average Joe is they don't have that.

  • When you see average joe vs NBA, the easiest way to tell who the NBA player is (if size is similar as in VantFleet's case) just look at who blatantly travels every time they go for a layup. Noone outside the NBA would do that without feeling dirty. NBA players will flex afterwards.
