How much credit should Pep Guardiola get for Manchester City’s success? | ESPN FC

Can anyone stop Manchester City? After their 19th-straight win in all competitions, ESPN FC’s Craig Burley and Jurgen Klinsmann recap Man City’s comfortable win vs. Borussia Monchengladbach, heap praise on Joao Cancelo for fueling their win, explain why Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero aren’t necessities in the attack for Pep Guardiola and what stands between them and Champions League glory.

  • two misconceptions about City in general and Pep in particular: 1. They have a bigger squad than anyone else. In fact, City have a smaller squad than most... 22 players to be exact while LFC have 25 as do MUFC 2. The club (and Pep) has unlimited funds and just go and buy players to blow everyone else out of the water. Again...this is just not true, City have lost out obtaining players such as Pogba, McGuire, Mbappe, and many more because they refuse to pay above what they regard to be market value. Chelsea, Liverpool, Man United, even Arsenal have all paid vastly inflated fees for players and just as importantly, offered deals that send their spending on wages through the roof. City's owners have it as their utmost objective to make the club a self sustaining entity and they have succeeded after a necessary initial outlay.

  • Quite a bit, obviously. But it should also be noted that he can't coach any improvement in a player, just look at how much he's spent on wing backs and central defenders season after season because he cannot get better performances out of players he bought 6 months ago for ridiculous money. This is why he's not joking when he says Man City win through money, take City's defence of last year and put it back in the PL this year and they're nowhere near where they are now. Everyone at the club recognises that Stones himself ha turned a corner in his development, nobody at the club especially pep himself is saying that he coached that improvement into Stones.

That's why I think a Super League (including some American teams north and south) Would be the best thing that can happen to football, and sadly worst thing for other clubs and it would kill the football as a sport in a matter of decades but decades of glorious quality football matches, week in and week out. is there anyone that would say no a reason to watch and follow clubs like Benefica, Porto, Lisbon, Ajax, Celtic, Rangers, Dortmund, Lazio, Inter, Milan, Roma, Marseille, even Besiktas or Zenit AND Santos, Felamengo, River Plater, Boca Juniours, LA FC, LA Galaxy, Redbulls without having to follow their respective leagues, NO UCL, EU League, Seperate Leagues, no FA, fukin comunity shield match, No del rey absoloutley Nothing But a 40-Club World League where U can have matches like PSG vs Santos, Liverpool vs Rangers. Other than that a couple of League titles and a fa cup isn't exactly a statement. not to mention all the money guardiola's wasted with some terrible signings they made when he first came to the club. Klopp comes in to Liverpool and they win the league and CL, plus lost another final. Just as an example.

  • Glad to see someone praising Pep; he deserves million times more credit that ppl give him, what he did with Bayern... not winning UCL is the ultimate failure... when in fact its not a reflection of anything that can be used as criteria to measure a clubs' performance during the year. 6 group games, not even worth counting; in fact UCL is decided in 6 knockout matches, and time and again we have seen ref errors or a couple of individual mistakes end the race for the club. it's the most overrated title ever, all knockout comps are Real won 3 back to back to back UCLs, but remember how they played during the season in all comps. What Pep did for Bayern was 10 times more important than a 7-match race title, Kimmich, Lahm as DMF which led Germany to win the world cup, bringing in Thiago and improving tactical abilities of every single player, not just passing, seeing spaces, creating spaces, seeing the possibility of making spaces, Im talking about the players football vision and understanding of the pitch, what is possible to do and what will happen after doing so, when and how and where to move or how to make room for another to move to a position that would enable them to make chances for others or make spaces for another to create the chance that's football, that's how u measure the worth of a club, not by counting how many 7-match race titles they have Only one ref mistake can lead to a knock-out match loss at the first round, losing that game and not being able to score at the second leg... AND YOU ARE A FAILURE Liverpool's last UCL, they dropped out of all the competitions ASAP, so they can win 12+1 games...SMH

  • For the people that don’t want to give Pep credit and want to look for criticism I feel sorry for you. He is a credit to the sport, He helped create one of the greatest teams ever with barca, sure another manager may have won trophies with that team but would they have in such style? The tactical innovations of sweeper keepers, false 9’s, inverted fullbacks etc his teams are so distinctive in their style. You’d be able to spot his teams whatever kit they wear, and his teams play really attractive football. Even if you support his rival teams, if your a fan of football there must be some appreciation on what he brings to the game. People talk about money, sure he’s had a lot of it but I don’t think that should diminish his achievements. Players like Ederson, Gundogan, Bernardo silva, Sane, Rodri, Walker, Srones, Dias, Jesus, mahrez etc I could go on and on I wouldn’t say any of these players at the point of signing were like a Galactico signing. All excellent players, some were unknown, but have developed into a outstanding players individually and as part of a team. To ignore so many facts is silly to me. People who love football should admire what he does for the sport because he will be gone soon.
